Farewell to LabVIEW because the licensing model isn’t suitable?

It has been several years now since NI switched its licensing model for its widely used development environment, LabVIEW, to annual subscriptions. Although this change has since been reversed, as it was recognised that it was unsuitable for many applications, it caused quite a stir in the relevant forums and social media channels for a long time. Many users complained that the cost of the licences outweighed the benefits of the software.

Yet the licence costs – whether perpetual licences or subscriptions – are actually completely irrelevant for many users, as the licensing model only affects the creation and modification of the software.

And this is better handled by professional programming service providers anyway, rather than by employees who work on the software ‘on the side’ and ‘every now and then’. This is because service providers not only have the latest software at their disposal, but also keep up to date through daily use of it; furthermore, through appropriate organisation and documentation, they ensure that the software remains usable and maintainable for years to come.

We at müller+krahmer are one such service provider….
