Easily connect NI DIAdem and LabVIEW to Beckhoff I/O terminals via OPC UA

Although our main focus as an NI partner is naturally on NI hardware, at müller+krahmer – as specialists in fieldbuses and interfaces – we have extensive experience in integrating components from different manufacturers. Sometimes this requires in-depth knowledge of protocols and technologies as well as complex programming, as in the case of our LabVIEW libraries for the fieldbus interface boards of Hilscher’s cifX family. Sometimes, however, it is sufficient simply to be aware of the availability of standardised interfaces and to use them.

This is the case with the combination of the Beckhoff IoT bus coupler EK9160 and NI DIAdem or LabVIEW. Both the hardware and the software support OPC UA, making it possible to access a wide range of Beckhoff terminals from within DIAdem or LabVIEW. The simplest way is to use DIAdem: connect the terminals to the bus coupler, connect the bus coupler to the PC via Ethernet, select the signals in the OPC UA blocks of DIAdem-DAC – and you’re done. LabVIEW requires a little more programming effort, but the available examples help with implementation.
